LIFE VitiCaSe

Carbon Farming

LIFE VitiCaSe project is an initiative co-funded by the EU LIFE Programme, aimed at revolutionizing sustainable viticulture in Italy. The project focuses on enhancing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) through innovative carbon farming practices in vineyards, addressing the critical challenge of turning soil from a carbon source back into a carbon sink. By leveraging state-of-the-art agronomic techniques and collaborating with esteemed partners like CREA Agriculture and Environment (CREA-AA) and CREA Policies and Bioeconomy (CREA-PB) and Image Line, LIFE VitiCaSe seeks to not only preserve Italy’s renowned wine production but also contribute significantly to global climate change mitigation efforts.

Through the development of a pilot business model for promoting land-based CO2 removals, supported by an advanced IT tool for Carbon Credits certification, the project aims to increase carbon stocks in agricultural soils, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and create a replicable framework for climate-smart agriculture in the viticulture sector.

Objectives

Increase agricultural carbon stocks in soil

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Contribute to climate change mitigation

Enhace Biodiversity

Improve Soil Health

Promote Sustainable Practices, Collaboration, and Innovation

Activities:

  • Creation of a database on agronomic practices
  • Define and implement sustainable soil management practices specifically tailored for vineyards to increase the storage of organic carbon in the soil
  • Utilize specialized IT technologies to estimate the carbon credits generated by these practices in vineyards compared to traditional farming methods.
  • Develop robust monitoring and verification procedures to enable third-party certification of the carbon credits generated, ensuring credibility and marketability.
  • Deploy the system in four pilot vineyards across three farms
  • Evaluation of the economic results and the business model for farmers
  • Preparation of an exploitation plan for replicating project results.
