Fazenda São Paulo

ARR

Fazenda São Paulo Agroforestry

is a reforestation project, launched in 2013, with the aim of sequestering carbon dioxide through the planting of more than 478,000 Eucalyptus trees.
To date, the project has removed more than 250,000 tons of CO2.

BASELINE

1

Baseline scenario

287 hectares of land totally degraded due to the extensive breeding of beef cattle that has been present for many years

SOLUZIONE

2

Solution

Planting of Eucalyptus which has an extraordinary ability to remove CO2 and a very high production of O2

PreparazioneTerreno

3

Planting

Reduction of erosion, leveling and terracing of land, fertilization and planting of 1,666 plants per hectare

Protezione foresta nativa

4

Native forest restoration

Restoration of over 250 hectares of native forest called “cerrado”. These protected areas intersect with the reforested areas forming a “mosaic” landscape

Outcomes

Environmental

In addition to the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, the project has brought numerous environmental benefits. The soil has increased its fertility, especially its organic matter content. The coverage by the forest allowed less water vaporization, an arrest of soil loss in the event of heavy rains and a reduction in the reflectivity of the same (responsible for the so-called “greenhouse effect”). In terms of microclimate, there was also a lowering of relative temperatures.

Social

The project has created new job opportunities for the local community, generating strong empowerment through training and knowledge learning in agroforestry management, resulting in a better quality of life for workers and their families.

Biodiversity

The protection and regeneration of the native “cerrado” forest has generated multiple benefits for biodiversity. It has promoted the return of wild animal species that are now considered to have disappeared. In these areas, which thanks to the project have been geo-referenced and fenced, there is a ban on grazing, a ban on hunting and fishing and a total ban on circulation. In this way, wild animals have found food, shelter and can interact in total safety with individuals of the same species.

Today 7 species, considered by the IUCN as “endangered” and “vulnerable”, are present in these protected areas: the Puma, the Maned wolf, the Tapir, the Pampas Deer, the Giant Anteater and the beautiful Hyacinth Macaw. These species in the absence of the project would no longer be present in the region.

sustenableGoals

The SDGs, or the Sustainable Development Goals, are a series of 17 interconnected goals, defined by the UN in 2015 as a strategy "to achieve a better and more sustainable future." The SDGs recognize the close link between human well-being, growth economic, social inclusion and the health of natural systems.
